When I started getting more involved in DE&I work one of my goals was to always get more involved in South Jersey where I grew up. After, documenting a couple of events last year with one of the photographers that I mentor, Reji Berrouet, I started to learn the work we were doing in the music industry was really just DEI work. I realized I could use my love of music, art, and technology to address DE&I issues and improve the community. In October I partnered with Stockton University to have Charles McAllister aka Sir Charles come and speak to the kids about his journey in the music industry. As a South Jersey native who attended Stockton Day Camp and Stockton University before going on to become a Grammy-Nominated songwriter, I thought his story was important for kids to hear from South Jersey. Based on the work I have been doing in the music industry and other industries I have learned everyone benefits from a more diverse, and inclusive society that allows for more equity. Especially, depending on your location and career path. So it was important to start showing kids in South Jersey some of the different career options available to them in the music industry. Also, show them that growing up in a place like South Jersey you could still win a Grammy as a songwriter. Years ago when I was volunteering at, For The Culture, or P3 Entertainment Group as it was originally called I was developing a couple of projects with their publicist to help address DE&I issues in the music industry. At the time, I just saw it as a way to be more creative, solve problems, and help talented people that were being overlooked. Eventually, I would realize those are some of the main principles behind DE&I work. It is my hope that telling these different stories about people from South Jersey improves DE&I and the community, especially in South Jersey.
